Background of the study
Economic resilience among internally displaced persons (IDPs) is critical for their recovery and long-term stability. In Lafia Local Government Area, Nasarawa State, adult education programs are being deployed as a tool to bolster the economic capabilities of IDPs. These programs are designed to provide practical skills, financial literacy, and vocational training that empower displaced individuals to rebuild their livelihoods despite adverse conditions (Chinwe, 2023). The concept of economic resilience involves the capacity of individuals and communities to withstand economic shocks and recover quickly from disruptions. Through targeted adult education, IDPs gain not only basic literacy skills but also specialized training in areas such as micro-enterprise development, budgeting, and market analysis, which are essential for entrepreneurial success (Duru, 2024). This educational approach is underpinned by the belief that knowledge is a powerful resource for economic empowerment. By enhancing skills and providing access to critical information, adult education initiatives help IDPs to identify new opportunities, manage resources efficiently, and reduce dependency on external aid. Moreover, these programs facilitate social cohesion and community support, creating a network of individuals who can collaborate in economic activities. Recent research has highlighted the positive correlation between adult education and economic outcomes, suggesting that well-designed educational interventions can significantly enhance the economic resilience of vulnerable populations (Emeka, 2025). The integration of practical training with theoretical knowledge in these programs ensures that participants are not only able to improve their personal economic status but also contribute to the broader economic development of their communities. Furthermore, adult education serves as a platform for fostering innovation and adaptability among IDPs, enabling them to navigate the complex challenges associated with displacement. This study aims to investigate how adult education impacts economic resilience among IDPs in Lafia, providing valuable insights into the effectiveness of current programs and identifying areas for improvement (Chinwe, 2023).
Statement of the problem
Internally displaced persons in Lafia face numerous economic challenges that impede their ability to rebuild their lives. Despite the introduction of adult education programs designed to enhance economic resilience, many IDPs remain economically vulnerable due to factors such as limited access to resources, inadequate training, and persistent socio-political instability (Chinwe, 2023). The education programs, while promising, often lack the practical components required to address the complex economic realities of displacement. Many participants report that the training received is too theoretical and does not translate into tangible income-generating activities. Moreover, the rapid changes in local economic conditions and market demands further exacerbate the challenges faced by IDPs (Duru, 2024). There is also a significant gap in the evaluation of these programs, making it difficult to ascertain their true impact on the economic empowerment of displaced individuals. The lack of consistent follow-up and mentoring further undermines the potential benefits of adult education interventions. Additionally, external factors such as political unrest and limited access to financial services continue to hinder economic progress among IDPs. As a result, there is a pressing need to examine the specific mechanisms through which adult education contributes to economic resilience and to identify the barriers that limit its effectiveness. Without addressing these issues, the potential of adult education to transform the economic prospects of internally displaced persons may remain unrealized, leaving them trapped in cycles of poverty and dependency (Emeka, 2025).
Objectives of the study

What barriers prevent the effective utilization of skills acquired through adult education?
What strategies can improve the economic outcomes of adult education programs for IDPs?
Research Hypotheses
Adult education programs significantly enhance the economic resilience of IDPs.
Inadequate practical training is a major barrier to economic empowerment among IDPs.
Enhanced program design and mentorship improve the translation of educational skills into economic benefits.
